For my high school students, most of them will be the first in their families to graduate and have the opportunity to continue their education at a higher level. Coming from neighborhoods of poverty, crime, and violence, they are heroes in my eyes. Growing up in Oakland isn't easy for them yet they show up to school every day, ready to learn and push themselves forward.
My classroom is a diverse mix of every cultural identity and learning style that makes Oakland the great place that I teach.
On a daily basis my students teach me just as much as I teach them. They are the force behind our school. They are the leaders, the mentors, the fighters, and the motivators.
My Project
With my AVID college elective course, students are engaged in weekly tutorial groups. During this time student presenters bring a problem to their group and as a whole they engage in the Socratic process to attempt to address these misunderstandings.
Whiteboards are essential in allowing this collaborative process to be a success.
Our current boards are falling apart and are becoming a danger to students. They are being held up by desks and taking away from the process of the students owning their misunderstandings and coming together to work through these confusions.
In college, study groups are crucial. I am trying to engage my students in this same process so they are prepared to advocate for themselves in the future. These whiteboards will transform the collaborative group work in my classroom space!
