Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students represent the beautiful diversity of Phoenix (65% Hispanic, 18% White, 11% Black) and come in to our school with both a drive to learn and a gap in learning that builds up from a lack of opportunities growing up in a low-income community. They are gritty and zesty and have all the character needed to succeed in the world, and our community of teachers is ready to do more for them than we have been.
My Project
Our students need not only content expertise from their teachers, but teachers who understand the whole student. The historical truths of growing up dark in America require a new approach to education, one that we are not taught in teacher ed programs.
With this library, our teachers have the means to educate themselves to better educate their students.
We can no longer pretend that focusing on subjects is enough to prepare our students for life. We have a core group of teachers committed to doing more for our students, and with these materials, we will be able to start this lifelong journey.
