Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"If you're making mistakes it means you're out there doing something." - Neil Gaiman. This is the driving idea behind the work we do in my classroom. Editing and revision never end even after publication. We are always pushing ourselves and learning from the missteps along the way.
I teach in my home community.
I graduated from here, I grew up here, and I live here now. My students are just like me in so many ways and I love the challenge of adapting to the new set of needs they have that the changes in our town brings. Our demographics are changing every year, we're getting bigger, new cultures are colliding and yet the heart of the community remains the same, the stories remain the same, and the challenges linger. My students are are more aware of the world around them than I ever was and it's so inspiring to see how the changes in our community have encouraged them to learn and to grow. Our school creates such a positive atmosphere that fosters that thirst for knowledge and that ever growing need for connection. Every day I see my students reaching across boundaries that I never knew existed and it fills me with pride and hope for our future. I know I'm teaching the leaders of tomorrow and I am so proud to work in my native community.
My Project
We are moving towards even more technology integration in our district and we have so many resources at our finger tips but our students don't necessarily have the same access to personal devices as some of the other schools in the district. We have computer carts and iPad carts available for check out but the computers are very old and the iPads don't come with keypads. Not to mention we only have about 8 of each and there are 3,000+ students in our school. My students need consistent and easy access to computers every day if we are going to be able to integrate all the amazing tech we have into the classroom. My students need 10 chromebooks so they have easy access to computers in class every day. When we get these devices students will be able to build their word processing skills, understand online partnerships, be able to develop their research skills, and be exposed to all the resources available to them online. We will be working in google docs, using canvas, exploring peer review with turn it in and most importantly learning to use the internet appropriately.
It's my third year in the class room and so far I've wished I had done more to educate my students on just how easy their lives could be if they used technology appropriately.
Each year I amaze a student when I show them google drive or how easy research is when you know how to work search engines. If my students have access to computers in class they'll leave with the knowledge they need to overcome some very difficult obstacles in life and they'll be able to navigate the world easier.
