My Students

I am a teacher in a rural, low-income/high poverty school. My students are faced with many challenges both in and out of the classroom. Due to our rural location on an Indian Reservation, my students lack exposure to good examples of money management and saving plans. I would like to provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences that stretch their thinking.

I hope to inspire learners to understand the importance of financial literacy so they can have a stable future.

Many of my students are being raised in single parent households or by grandparents and all receive free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. This prevents many from learning good money management skills as well purchasing experiences many of us take for granted. In my classroom, I focus on their potential and growth in a positive way. I may not be able to control their struggles outside of school, but I can control their experience during their time in class by teaching life skills in a creative, interactive, and positive way.

My Project

For the past three years my class has run a small Slime business. At the beginning of each year, I choose four responsible students as managers and we post job openings, have a meeting on proper interview attire, interview, hire, and give a budget to each team.

Starting a class business sounds fun but first students need money knowledge and an understanding of financial responsibilities.

The community I work with is high poverty. Students from a poverty background tend to have poor examples of money management.

The idea that every week they were making money on their teams and dreaming of what we could do with it came to a quick halt when I attempted to explain profit margins. The materials I have requested, a variety of board games and money management materials, will support the lessons I will put in place to support students in personal finances as well as how to understand how businesses are run. The games give students a personal allowance as well as income from a pretend job. Next, money responsibility, students will gain an understanding of the importance of keeping track of money. This includes having the skills to know how much money is available, how much money has been spent, and how much money must be saved for future needs. Finally, students will learn about saving and comparison shopping both in their personal finances and in their business plan. Ultimately, students will work on an online program which helps them start a food truck business. These skills will be brought together to more successfully run our classroom business, Crow Slime.
