Help me give my students LEGO® MINDSTORMS® Education EV3 Core Set. Mindstorm is a hands-on, cross-curricular STEM solution that engages students by providing the resources to design, build and program their creations while helping them develop essential skills.
I am a teacher in a rural, low-income/high poverty school. My students are faced with many challenges both in and out of the classroom. Due to our rural location on an Indian Reservation my students lack exposure to life outside their immediate neighborhood. I would like to provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences that stretch their thinking.
I hope to inspire learners to continue to work hard to reach their goals.
My students like to move, they love to dance and love lots of positive attention. Many of them are being raised in single parent households or by grandparents and all receive free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. These things may prevent them from learning to their fullest potential and many lack life experiences which many of us take for granted. In my classroom I focus on their potential and growth in a positive way. I may not be able to control their struggles outside of school, but I can control their experience during their time in class by teaching in a creative, interactive, and positive way.
My Project
LEGO MINDSTORMS will make a difference in my students' learning in that it will provide students with the hands-on learning they excel at while allowing them to use real life materials of construction instead of toilet paper rolls and masking tape.
The mechanical aspect of the robots will help students to see themselves as Engineers as they design robots, master basic and advanced programming, as well as hardware and data logging functions.
MINDSTORMS programming is done by dragging and dropping icons into a line on a tablet in order to form commands allowing students to build simple programs, and then easily and intuitively build on their skills until they are developing complex algorithms. Students will be using problem solving and cooperative learning in order to move forward in their understanding and to get the robot to complete the task at hand.
