I would like to request large classroom maps (on spring rollers) of California, the United States, and the World. As an avid traveler, I've been lucky enough to visit some of the world's most beautiful sights. From Greece to Scotland to Mexico, I've discovered that people everywhere are more alike than different. From a young age, I was surrounded by talks of traveling and this espoused a great desire to journey to as many countries as possible. I believe that children need exposure to various countries and cultures in order to become more compassionate and caring individuals. When children see that there are others just like them all over the world, I believe that it helps them make connections that cross physical boundaries. My students are fascinated by the few small maps that we have in the classroom. They pore over them, challenging each other to find this country or that one. I often want to do whole-class lessons on certain areas of the world but lack the large maps to do this. It would also be great to show them relationships/migrations between different countries and to have them see where their families have come from. I teach second and third grade in a low-income neighborhood where there are not enough resources to buy pencils let alone maps. But our school works hard to give the students the best education possible. Twenty lovely students sit with me every day, motivated and excited to learn all they can about the world. I firmly believe that large classroom maps can help enhance and enrich their school experience!
