This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Learning for all, whatever it takes—that’s the motto here at my school. Each teacher works with grit, resilience and faith that our students will grow every year. For the past two years, I’ve been inspired by the work and dedication of both teachers and students in this building. This year, I am teaching our school’s first Honors Eighth Grade English and Social Studies Class. I’ve witnessed these students emerge from new sixth graders into eighth graders that lead both inside and outside the classroom. The intent of this project is to provide these leaders books that will both inspire a love of literacy and challenge their historical thinking skills.
My Project
Thanks to my previous Donor's Choose Project, my students already have some excitement for works of historical fiction.
This project will continue my students' love of literacy by making cross curricular connections between current events, science, history, and literacy.
Soldier's Heart is a book that incorporates conflicting feelings of nationalism, fear, bravery, and despair. This novel is based on the life of Charley Goddard, a 15- year old volunteer in the Union Army of the Civil War.
While this book covers different historical events that occurred in the Civil War, it also has broader themes that connect to the current political climate of American was all as issues of trauma and depression. This book will help my students make connections between history as well as science and psychology.
