Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a teacher and cross country track coach in a 6-12 middle and high school located in the Bronx. I have been a teacher at this amazing school for almost 6 years and have been fortunate enough for the past 2 years to have coached track as well.
My cross country track students are dedicated and engaged students, interested in improving their cardio strength and endurance.
They are committed to becoming better long distance runners capable of running off road on some of the most challenging track courses in the Northeast. Almost all of my track students are new to running- a fact that is truly impressive! These amazing young men and women are willing to undertake learning a new discipline, recognizing that it will positively impact their health as well as their ability to perform in other athletic pursuits they are engaged in like basketball, baseball, softball etc. It is an honor to help guide them as they develop what I hope will be a lifelong love of running and physical fitness. I look forward to watching this metamorphosis take place.!
My Project
My students will utilize these jump ropes on the training days during which we run intervals or fartlicks rather than long run days. Jumping rope will be one of the cardio/plyometric exercises that they complete at the beginning of our practice prior to the run and core body workout. The cardio benefits of jumping rope will have a profound effect on their endurance during long runs. For some perspective, jumping rope for 5 minutes is the cardio equivalent of running a mile.
These jump ropes will make an enormous difference for my track students as they will be able to incorporate another proven exercise into their cross country workouts, with the focus on increasing both cardio endurance and running speed.
