The students involved in our district's cross country team are some of the finest young men and women I've ever met. We are a Title I district in a rural farming community in the upstate of South Carolina. Many of our students face challenging and difficult situations at home, but sports are an equalizer that can reach many who may not connect in a traditional classroom setting.
Cross country is a powerful tool to mentor students, allow them to feel loved and part of a team, and accomplish goals they never dreamed they could achieve.
Our cross country team is growing by leaps and bounds. This past season both our boys and girls' teams set records that our school has not seen in over 20 years! All students in grades 7th-12th are eligible to participate and we have guys and girls, varsity and JV, from all of these grades. This is my fifth year coaching cross country and I am excited about the impact cross country is having on so many students' lives.
My Project
Our cross country runners have a heart and passion like no other team I've seen! They need a few items to allow us to compete successfully in our upcoming season. Our runners need water bottles and carriers so they have water to drink at daily practices and at races. They need two rollers and a yoga stretch band to help relieve soreness before and after daily workouts. We need running bibs and safety pins for our home meet and community fun runs. We also need an air horn for practices and meets so that runners know when the timer starts for both short and long distance running days.
Each of these items, while small individually, will make a HUGE difference to our runners!
