In our district, we have a high number of students who qualify to receive free or reduced-price lunch. Ours is a very diverse, rural population. My students come from backgrounds that may not be able to provide experiences that they need to develop social and emotional skills, higher-order thinking skills, or critical thinking opportunities.
My second grade students are energetic, inquisitive, and love to learn in a variety of ways including music, art, movement, technology, small group work, and hands-on activities.
Our classroom is a safe place to ask questions, to learn from our failures and mistakes, to sustain our love of learning, and to celebrate our differences.
My Project
My 2nd grade friends come from many various background and experiences. Research has found that it is very important to have students use critical thinking skills in the classroom as this will help them in the future. By creating STEM activities in the classroom, it will allow students to think outside the box, use their creativity and imagination, work on fine motor skills and try something they may not have done in the past. By working together and listening to others ideas, students will be able to create through play and learn about trial and error. LEGO bricks, K'Nex kits, Magna Tiles and all of the other various STEM tools, will be used during morning work time and small group learning. This is a great opportunity to teach students in a new and different way to enhance their learning experience!
