My Students

My middle school students are amazing! They treat each other with respect and enjoy being at school. I get to teach 6th grade science, along with a lot of other great classes like shop classes, career awareness, and computer classes.

My Project

There are at least two major setbacks that come to mind when I consider educating students after Covid shut downs. One is student motivation. Many students enjoyed their time at home or got of typical school routines, and they just don't see the point of being at school, following school procedures, etc. The second is students' ability to solve problems. Many students stopped analyzing and thinking critically without a teacher there to guide them.

These resources will be used to motivate students with exciting projects that also help them with problem solving and thinking skills.

Here's an example: Much of the materials for this project is filament for a 3D printer. Students will use this filament to create projects that make learning come alive for them and make them think. For instance, students will design and print a ring that they can wear. I expect this to be fun and motivating for the students. It will also help them with math problems like scale and measurement. However, it will not be easy. They will have to use problem solving skills (and math) to figure out how to make the ring the size they need it to be.

That's just one example, but I have many other ideas for how students can use these materials to enhance their problem solving and thinking skills while increasing their desire to be at school through a creative building project.
