Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I love my students because they try hard. They come from a Title I school. Most come from poor families. These students were ravished by Hurricane Harvey slightly over one year ago. Three iPads were lost during the storm. As soon as our school was repaired, we went to work. Last year, despite a 7 week delay, my students exceeded the passing rate of the State of Texas STAAR assessment. They did this despite terrible living conditions. My students are resilient and tough. I cannot possibly express my love and admiration for them, or the pride I have teaching them.
My Project
My project is to use four iPads in my classroom. They will be used to differentiate my instruction. I teach three 1 hour 45 minute classes, so the project will affect 60 students. The new technology will allow a station of either four or eight students to solidify existing skills. It will allow mastery of weak skills by struggling students; and it will help all my students learn automaticity (remembering a basic math fact quickly with little thought). This is important all through math from 3rd grade forward.
I will also use them for a gifted and talented program entitled Patterns in Nature.
This project looks at ways the Fibonacci sequence can be used to form fractals. There are great videos and apps that will allow the GT students to do independent research. These students do not have this capability at home.
My project will infuse a shot of technology to a school with poor students. It will help make up for the 3 lost iPads during and after Hurricane Harvey. We will treasure them and use them!
