Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 10-12 grade students in an inner city, urban high school in South Los Angeles. The majority of my students are English Language Learners. They rise up to the challenges facing them. So much so, that they are undertaking and succeeding in multiple Advanced Placement (AP) courses.
Undertaking AP courses requires students to think logically and critically to problem-solve, and requires them to learn time management, organizational skills, and increase concentration.
Chess seemed like the most reasonable process to teach these skills. Therefore, my students decided to form a Chess Club on their own and asked me to be their supervising teacher. We were able to get donations of a few chess boards and random pieces (which students creatively adapted), but many students had to wait for a long time to get their opportunity to play. Being quite adaptable, my students have made it work thus far, by taking turns. Few students have left, since it took several days before they had a turn with the chess board and pieces. The students want to increase the level of interest in chess to more students and want to hold a tournament at the end of each semester.
My Project
We are requesting 20 Tournament Chess sets my students need to keep them participating and their interest level high. Having an adequate supply of complete chess boards and pieces will motivate my students to actively participate in the Chess Club. This will further allow my students to attain the necessary skills mentioned previously. These skills will not only assist my students in becoming better chess players, but also help them apply these skills in their daily lives.
By donating to our project, you will not only help to improve and increase student attention and focus, you will ultimately help to increase their academic achievement.
My students strive to be the first in their family to go to colleges and universities. In order to achieve this goal, my student will need to attain the skills mentioned above. My students will be able to see actual representations of chess puzzles, instead of seeing it on paper or in a book. In addition, my students will replay and analyze chess games played by former and current chess champions. This would not be possible without chess boards and pieces.
Finally, my students will be adequately supplied for their Chess Tournament they will host for the entire school. My students are very unselfish and want to share their knowledge and motivation for chess with the remainder of their peers at school. They want to uplift their peers and share their new learning with them. I am hopeful that this endeavor will translate throughout the entire campus and transfer their newly acquired skills to their everyday lives.
