Our school's population has a 69% poverty rate and many of our students do not have access to technology at home. We are a small school that could use help with obtaining different technology resources. Many of my students have been coming to Coding Club each week. They are really excited to learn the new skills and work on real-world activities. Some have mentioned a desire to design software when they are adults.
Students have taken on the task of teaching their peers when they discover something new.
This club has given an opportunity for kids to feel like they "fit in" when they are not comfortable with the sports clubs. There is excitement in the room when students are engaged in coding club, a hunger to learn.
We have the option to borrow another school's Sphero robots but we need an iPad to use the robots. My goal is to teach our students to code, create projects using the green screen and begin programming a robot.
My Project
I have a group of students who want to become more technologically literate. Many students have joined a computer coding club I started this year. Currently, I have 4th and 5th graders involved but would like to invite the 3rd graders also.
To make this dream happen I will need a couple of iPads for the club.
The 3rd graders will use our existing Chromebooks to begin to learn coding and the 4th and 5th graders will be able to program robots, design games through coding, and create innovative presentations using a green screen. To help my students become Future Ready I would like to teach them to design computer games in an iPad Scratch App, to use critical thinking skills in programming a robot and use their creativity in projects using a green screen app on the iPad.
