This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
"Student engagement is the product of motivation and active learning. It is a product rather than a sum because it will not occur if either element is missing." Elizabeth F. Barkley, Student Engagement Techniques: A Handbook for College Faculty
In my fifth grade classroom, I must keep all students engaged.
All too often, fifth graders come to the classroom with heavy burdens and distractions. It is important for kids to feel successful in finishing engaging activities.
My students come from diverse backgrounds. We are in a high poverty urban area where students need to be engaged critical thinking. About 78% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. In my fifth grade classroom, I have 25 students with a wide range of abilities, backgrounds, cultures, special education needs, speech needs, and language needs. Our school has over 700 students from kindergarten through 6th grade. My students are energetic, and they get excited about projects!
My Project
Students will use this wide variety of resources in multiple ways. With the critical thinking teacher texts, I will be able to provide students with engaging projects on multiple topics including engineering. With the Scholastic News subscription, my students will be engaged in grade level appropriate current events and be able to have deeper discussions.
With the Short Films and DVDs, students will be engaged in comparing and contrasting digital media with texts. They will also be used as hooks at the beginning of lessons to grab the students' attention.
The clear plastic tubs will be used for our classroom library. I need a way to keep our classroom books organized so that students can easily select a book of their choice and be engaged in texts.
This project is very important because it helps to increase engagement in my classroom, therefore increasing students' love of learning!
Your donation will make a difference on my kids this year, and for many years to come. I have selected high interest and engaging materials to help foster the love of learning, and I have to pass this love of learning along.
