Help me give my students resources for mentor sentences for grammar and fiction/nonfiction reading and character awards we will use for character studies from novels as well as people from history and science.
My students are amazing and resilient. Many are immigrants or from immigrant families. Many are affected by being homeless and neighborhood violence, but come to school every day ready to learn. In a neighborhood where violence is an everyday part of life, school becomes so much more than just a place to learn. The students in my classroom recognize the value of an education as a means to a positive future and hopefully, someday a safer community, as well.
Our students are English language learners in an urban neighborhood.
School is their safe haven and a place where they can focus on a positive future. They are eager to learn and take pride in the investment of others in their education.
This year I am teaching a 4/5 split. I am looking for resources to span both grade levels and give opportunities for critical thinking in reading, science and social studies. Included here is a bundle that works using picture books that span all subjects that will be critical for whole group and small group. A set of character awards that we will use to study not just novel characters but also important figures from science and history. There is also a set of critical thinking skills that can be used while playing Jenga. The last resource has a set of nonfiction passages that we can use to practice science and social studies during our reading block. I am so excited for the challenges and rewards that this year will bring. The future will be walking through my classroom doors in just a few short weeks!
