Critical Roll

My students need players handbooks, rules books, campaign guidebooks, a map to draw out their playing field, and the dice to get rolling with!

My Students

You might remember them as the quiet, quirky kids who just never quite fit in or the ones who tried just a little too hard... The one who could ramble a list of names of planets or away team that has visited or digressed into a full-on debate over which Pokemon is better.

They are the children of geek culture, and they're here to play.

Marching to a beat of a different drummer, they step up to the table, eager for the adventure. Now they just need the supplies for an epic campaign.

My Project

Role-playing and play acting has always been a cherished activity of childhood, but in recent years, children are loosing more and more time to engage in this critical socialization activity. In light of the recent reemergence of popularity in D&D (and finding out I play Dungeons and Dragons), several of my students asked me to start a D&D club at school.

While most of the children are interested in role-playing magical beings on an adventure quest, there is also a small handful of students who are interested in crafting the adventures.

But with any adventure, it helps to know the rules. Any experienced player can tell you D&D is a complex world. That's why I'm requesting the manuals and handbooks necessary to provide explanations on character creation, rules of encounters and engagements, and all the nitty-gritty details needed for gameplay. 20-sets of dice will help ensure all players have their own set for rolling. Page protectors will provide protection for character sheets. A reusable grid map will help us visualize our encounters and setting. Instead of miniatures, we'll use Bingo counting chips to keep track of character placement.

Not only will all students engage in socialization activities -- learning how to work as part of a group with a common goal, how to negotiate, how to strategize, and how to make quick-snap decisions and deal with the consequences within a story setting--they will also collaborate in a collective narrative. Plus, they'll get to do some quick addition math facts when they have to add up their dice rolls!
