Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Every social justice movement that I know of has come out of people sitting in small groups, telling their life stories, and discovering that other people have shared similar experiences."
~ Gloria Steinem
As diverse students with disabilities, it is important that my students share their experiences and successes to inspire others through digital storytelling. My students are energetic and fun inner-city high school students. My students have a range of disabilities including learning disabilities, visual impairments, autism and intellectual disabilities. A majority of them are also English Language Learners. My students show greater enthusiasm when they participate in multi-sensory learning activities and use technology.
My school is located in a large, urban city. Of our 3,100 students, 94% are low-income, 10% of the students have disabilities, and 8% are English Language Learners. More than 75% of my particular students are low-income, have disabilities and/or are English Language Learners. I teach my students not to let their personal home situations, English Language Learner status or disabilities hinder their academic or social-emotional growth.
My Project
My students will use the Chromebook, iPad, and accessories to create and disseminate critical literacy digital storytelling multi-media movies. Their projects will encourage kindness, understanding, and empathy. As they study inequality in education through various topics, they will make personal connections to their own lives or communities and creatively express stories of encouragement.
My students have disabilities and overcome personal and academic obstacles on a daily basis; they have inspirational stories to share.
As they work on critical literacy skills, they will serve their community by participating in digital storytelling through creating technology-based projects/videos that they can share with their families, elementary school pen-pal buddies, and/or peers. Topics will include but are not limited to the following: Teamwork through Special Olympics, Mental Health Awareness, and Anti-bullying.
