I am an Oklahoma educator. As a Kindergarten teacher, I am often the first exposure my students have to a structured classroom. This can be difficult and overwhelming for any student, but because our school is a low-income/high poverty school, my students are often faced with additional challenges outside the classroom that make the transition even more stressful.
Having a welcoming and structured classroom is imperative for these children to feel safe and loved.
My students bring wonder and enthusiasm to my class every day. They deserve to have the best experience possible. Most of our students are on free/reduced lunch and do not experience a lot of things other children might in their daily lives. Despite all this they are eager to learn and grow and it is my goal to enrich them as much as possible.
Unfortunately, we are also in a state which is struggling to provide adequate funding to education, both through teacher pay and in-class materials. My students are the future. Many great people have risen from poverty because of their determination and help from a supportive school system.
My Project
My students need a place to gather together as a class for morning meetings and group activities. Having a Colors and Shapes Learning Carpet in my Kindergarten room will help my students practice routines, develop social skills, practice learning endurance, and learn how to work in a group or team.
In Kindergarten, students must begin with the basics, like learning how to sit in an organized and routine fashion.
The learning carpet will give them a structured space in which to learn, play, dance, create, and participate.
This carpet will be an educational “game board” for learning! My students will be organized and structured for their group learning.
