Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is a neighborhood school that serves students with high needs. We are a high poverty school where most of our students receive free or reduced lunch. My students face daily obstacles that often influence their ability to learn.
Our first grade classroom is a fun and serious place to learn.
We spend our days learning to read, write, compose and decompose numbers, and explore a variety of science topics...most of a time there is a song to go with our content. We sing together all the time...pretty much about everything!
My Project
My current classroom rug has been under my management for the past 12 years. I would hate to tell you the torment it has been through (you can use your imagination)! In first grade, we spend so much time together reading, singing, and exploring on the rug. When I call the students to the rug, I cringe at what I am asking them to sit on (although not one of them ever complains).
My students deserve a clean and comfortable learning environment.
I am teaching my students to take pride in their classroom. They are required to keep up with supplies, clean up any spills from breakfast and snack, keep our books organized in the library, and to take care of their cubbies by keeping backpacks and supplies tidy. Then...we come to the rug. I would like this space to be consistent with the cleanliness of the rest of our classroom.
