My Students

Our room represents diversity in ethnicity, socio-economic status, learning styles, personalities, and opinions. I teach two sections of fifth graders. Each section has 30 students. The majority of our students in an urban school of approximately 600 students are low-income.

Our students are enthusiastic about sharing their thinking, particularly about books.

While each group of kids varies, I find that in time we become a learning community that values the participation and thinking of each member. They come from such a variety of backgrounds, and we learn that we can all benefit from each other's experiences.

My Project

A Cricut Maker is a die-cut machine used to cut vinyl, paper, felt, fabric, and more. It is used by many to make scrapbooks and even quilts. It can also serve a wonderful purpose in the classroom.

John Keating stated, "No matter what anybody tells you, words and ideas can change the world." I hope to encourage my students to find words and ideas that speak to them and get them up in a big and powerful way on the walls of our classroom.

The Cricut Maker will allow for ongoing opportunities throughout the year for all students to share their big ideas about life and learning. By making their thinking visible to others, I hope to inspire them to inspire their classmates.
