Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work with bilingual students, many of them new to the country. All of them are at different stages of language progression with the bulk of them at the beginning and emerging stages. A hundred percent of my students come from low income or no income families and for this reason, all of them receive free breakfast and lunch.
Most parents cannot afford supplies needed for end-of-unit projects, and for this reason, I try to have as much as my students may possibly need in the classroom.
Many parents are unable to provide school supplies, uniforms and pay for school trips. The school provides many backpacks with school supplies. In addition, uniforms are given to the students due to the fact that they are living in shelters. The school pays fees for students living in shelters that cannot pay to afford trips. Many of my students arrive very early to school and at dismissal wish they could stay. I have worked with my students to develop a safe learning and rigorous learning environment where they feel safe and wanted.
My Project
My school has many school performances for students to participate throughout the school year. Many times the students struggle with what to wear. There are many other events that we wished we had matching/personalized t-shirts, such as, special holidays, school fairs, field trips and festivals.
Thanks to many donors and DonorsChoose, we recently got a Cricut Air 2 machine, however, I did not know that so many accessories and materials were needed.
It would be awesome for my fifth graders to be able to design and make their own t-shirts for school performances that they would get to keep, but for this to happen we need the accessories and materials.
My students will use the Cricut iron on, blades, pens, ScorStylus and other materials to create their own shirts and hats for school performances. In addition, this would be a great end-of-the-school-year group project and will be a terrific way for them to remember their time in elementary school.
