We are an integrated collaborative teaching (ICT) first-grade class, with a mixture of general and special education students at a high-needs, Title I school in the Bronx. While the majority of students come from low-income homes or from homes with limited parental involvement, they are enthusiastic and come to school every day ready to learn. They see school as a consistent part of their daily lives and love to make me proud.
My first graders are some of the happiest children I have ever had the pleasure of working with; they inspire me to provide the best education I can for them.
My Project
While I may not be able to control their home lives; however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day. I strive every day to make my classroom an environment where my students feel safe, comfortable and confident. We are requesting a Cricut machine, white t-shirts in assorted sizes, and heat transfer vinyl sheets to create and design shirts to showcase our class spirit! I want to provide my students with an opportunity to use their creativity to design shirts to showcase their pride of being in our classroom community. These shirts can be utilized multiple times throughout the year, including field trips, field day and assemblies.
Not only can students design shirts, but the Cricut will benefit my students and can be used to create individualized flash cards, writing prompts, bulletin boards and creative extension projects.
I would also create images to match to letters by beginning, middle, or ending sounds. These letters and pictures would be used by my beginning readers for hands-on literacy games and activities. At this point after teaching for 10 years, I still trace or print and cut things by hand. While I plan on continuing with these practices as needed, the use of a Cricut machine would greatly decrease the amount of time I spend prepping and allow me to focus on teaching.
