Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In my mathematics classroom, we learn math in the context of living in the reality of our lives and community. It is exciting, challenging, and very rewarding to teach middle school math to my students. They are passionate advocates for themselves and immensely challenged by the circumstances they face. Many are new immigrants, English language learners, and from low-income families and neighborhoods. Often they come in believing that math is not relevant to their lives. Some of them have harsh realities and challenges just surviving, let alone thriving.
They inspire me to be my best and to raise my capacities to inspire them to work hard and learn that they can master learning, master math, and thrive in this world with consistent focused work.
I am not satisfied with the status quo and that is what I work to inspire in them. The rewards of making a difference with these students really hit home and leave me moved and inspired. I find myself often crying when I am really being with them.
My Project
Help me give my students a Cricut station in my classroom that will give them the opportunity to develop hands on skills, while learning financial literacy. Using a Cricut is a great opportunity for students to learn a skill that can help them not only create projects but work together and problem solve. Using a Cricut will bring Financial Literacy and STEM into the classroom while using creativity. Engaging students with STEM style learning activities helps students grow in many ways.
Financial Literacy skills and team work skills are two necessary skill sets for students to achieve success in life.
Our school is currently learning financial literacy and entrepreneurship across multiple subjects. These materials will help our students learn the processes of planning, budgeting, advertising, creating, and making projects for the classroom.
With a Cricut, my students will be given the opportunity to build skills through a variety of learning activities and projects. Students will also learn how to manipulate the software to create designs for all sorts of projects projects such as, STEM, Math science projects, signs, posters, displays, t-shirts, and 3D objects.
