We are a Title I school in a rural area, serving approximately 260 students in Head Start through 5th grade. Every student in our school is eligible to eat free breakfast and lunch through the USDA Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) Program. This program allows students to eat meals for free without their parents having to complete an application and provide income information. Because all students are eligible for free meals, this reduces the stigma associated with a child receiving free or reduced meals and the parent having to complete the application.
We live in a close-knit community that is supportive of their neighbors, and especially of our school.
Having a small school population allows teachers and other school personnel to closely know and work with students and their families. Many of the school staff members also live in the community, and several attended our school as an elementary student.
Our students need a Cricut Explore Air 2 machine, vinyl supplies, and necessary accessories to show creativity in the classroom and other areas throughout our school! One of my goals for this project is to add uplifting quotes and character education trait reminders to our student bathrooms. We hope that students will be encouraged by the inspirational phrases and colorful graphics!
Just like the vinyl will stick on the bathroom mirrors, the goal is for the visual reminders to "stick" with the students so the quotes and traits will carry-over into their daily lives!
Before I decided to submit this project, I talked with our lead custodian to see if this project idea would affect her routine for cleaning the bathrooms. She was excited about this project and hopeful about the positive and uplifting impact we could have on students!
The awesome thing about this project is the versatility of the machine--it will not be limited to only one area or grade level of our school! In addition to the quotes and character education trait reminders, bulletin boards and classroom decorations will have a more personalized look. Creating fun visuals and organized spaces in the classroom are appealing to students. The Cricut Explore Air 2 machine would also be available for other teachers to use when creating personalized materials for their classroom. Cutting pre-printed items with the Cricut will save teachers an extraordinary amount of time when preparing centers. The Cricut would also be used to help decorate for our annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon held every April. The possibilities are endless for “Cricut Creativity at Casar”!
