Our students come to school every day (with 98.4% attendance) in a diverse, low-income, urban community. Sixty-eight percent are Asian, 14% African-American, 11% Latino, 6% Caucasian, and 1% multiracial.
Our school community supports the whole student academically, physically, and emotionally.
By meeting the needs of our students on many levels, we help them to find success in school and in their community. It is a collective effort to help each of our students become the best people they can be. We try to create a foundation that they will take with them through their education and beyond. In this age of COVID-19, it is especially important for us to care for all of our students in every way possible.
My Project
Each year, teachers like me take responsibility for designing monthly bulletin boards, the graduating class t-shirt and even the items we sell at the annual holiday shop, which raises funds for our middle school class trip. This time in remote learning during the pandemic has helped us recognize that our students are capable of more than we think.
A Cricut system will help our students harness their creativity to design and execute decorations for the school, shirts to commemorate their graduation, and trinkets for fundraising.
By putting the responsibility in the hands of our middle schoolers, we are allowing them to take ownership of those things that are some of the most memorable aspects of their final years in elementary school. By fostering this ownership, these memories will become deeper, more special and longer lasting. Please help me to bring this opportunity to our students.
