There are 75 third graders in our schools. Our classes contains students with varying abilities, including students in Basic Skills, students with IEPs, English language learners, and students who perform above grade-level expectations. They are diverse in family backgrounds, ethnicities, religions, socioeconomic statuses, and many other factors.
"'Note that highly engaging environments often promote empowerment because they focus on student agency and ownership.
The moment you add student ownership to student engagement, you have empowerment." -John Spencer.
Our students are the future. It is essential to teach them in a way that they can flourish. We want to give them tools to support their experiences in school and enhance their learning opportunities. Our goal for our students is to make learning as engaging as possible to put their education into their hands. By making their school experiences meaningful, we are giving them lessons and memories they can carry with them for throughout their lives.
My Project
In an effort to empower our students, the third grade classes at our school are giving opportunities for our children to become "makers." They are transforming trash into treasure, designing, building, and transforming our classroom to enhance our curriculum. Some examples of this include a recent project where each classroom became a different type of community (urban, suburban, and rural). We presented the students with a task: transform our room so it looks like the selected community. From there, the students took over with little input from teachers. They created a movie theater, lemonade stand, library, broadway show, farm (complete with cow milking), and many other activities.
"You can't use up creativity.
The more you use the more you have." - Maya Angelou. While it is vital to teach students traditionally, giving them opportunities to apply their learning gives it a value that lasts with them for years. Our classes are looking to give our students a monthly project based on our curriculum to provide them with enriching experiences. A cricut machine and accessories will assist them in their creations. They can design signs and posters. They can create 3D designs, gifts, and games. Their own creativity is the limit, which we are hoping to foster and encourage while they are still young and imaginative.
