Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
On a recent Saturday, as a special treat I took four of my second graders hiking in a park in San Jose, California near our school, Cureton Elementary. Together we explored some of the park's 13 miles of trails, plants, and wildlife.
As a first-year teacher in a low-income school district, I am so pleased to take my students on field trips where they get to immerse themselves in nature and science. I am hoping to provide all of my students with the opportunity to attend a week-long science camp this summer to become “Summer Scientists”.
Over the summer, the Alum Rock Park offers week-long camps for students. Each camp provides a unique focus for different interests and skill building. Therefore, I am requesting funding for tuition for five groups of four students each. Each group is specific to the individual students, their strengths and their areas of interest.
This proposal highlights the "Creek Week" group. I have four students who would love to participate in Creek Week this July. These students will get their hands wet as they find out what it is like to be an aquatic biologist. They will discover living and non-living characteristics of creeks through exploration, experiments, games and hands-on activities. They will observe and identify the creek animals and also conduct experiments to test the water.
I have contacted the camp directors to make sure the proposal is viable. They know my school district and understand most of my students' families cannot afford summer camp for their children. They have offered us a reduced rate per student. Despite the fact that many of my students qualify for free and reduced lunch, the families of participating students will also contribute toward the fee. I am requesting the remaining funds to make this opportunity possible for each student.
I know the students will benefit greatly from this hands-on science experience. The camp experience will spark their minds, introduce them to new ideas, and inspire in my students a greater appreciation for learning. More information on the camp is available at www.ysi-ca.org.
