My students are kind, thoughtful, and talented. They are so excited to come to art every week and I want to provide the best art education I can give them!
I want my students to have a well-rounded art education, but they have never been able to experience clay at school due to low funds.
We are a Title l school with most students receiving free lunch and breakfast every day. Our families work hard to provide for their children and really care about their education. Unfortunately, our school district provides a very small budget for art supplies in the art room. When you serve almost 500 students in the school, $100 just doesn't stretch that far.
Over the past three years as their art teacher, I've been able to give them many different artistic experiences including drawing, collage, mixed-media, and weaving--usually out of my own pocket. Now, I want to give them the experience of pottery. To be able to work with real clay and turn it into something real and amazing is something very special.
My Project
I believe few art mediums kindle growth and skills in children the way clay does. It helps promote self-confidence, encourages self-expression and develops problem-solving skills.
To be able to take a lump of clay and turn it into something useful or beautiful can be life-changing.
Children are naturally so very creative. I want to help them spark that creativity at a young age.
My students love to build with their hands, but they have never experienced real clay! They want to be able to see and feel what they create. They'll be able to create many different projects with this clay, such as projects ranging from necklace pendants to castles!
