My students are a creative bunch of students. They love to take risks in the classroom, and they work really well while working in cooperative groups. They are the types of students who encourage each other to think outside the box. For example, we recently had a prime number investigation in our classroom. The discussions were incredible and students were exploring why certain numbers are prime and some are not. Some students said, "I get it now, any even number except for 2 are prime numbers!" We celebrated their work and made a poster of all the rules they came up with while working with prime numbers.
More than half of the students in my classroom are English language learners.
They require a lot of visuals and hands-on support to meet their various learning needs. They are extremely hard-working, but I want to make sure that I provide them with the proper resources to best support their learning.
My Project
Thank you for taking the time to read about my project. These tools will help provide the resources for my students to become innovative thinkers.
For example, since my school is in Silicon Valley, surprisingly we do not receive a lot of funding for teachers to purchase items for their students.
Since my school is a Title I school in the South Bay, we are quite unique compared to the rest of the schools in our community. In my classroom, we currently have outdated tables for my fourth graders. They work extremely well together while working in groups, and I feel that by having white board tables, they will excel even more! My vision is to use whiteboard paper to cover the tables in our classroom and give students an opportunity to express their creativity while solving math problems and other challenges that may arise. We are currently starting a new unit in math where students will need to draw arrays and experiment with numbers while multiplying by ten. These whiteboard tables will be absolutely perfect to assist their learning!
The last part of the project is stability chairs. My students currently have old uncomfortable chairs in our classroom. What better way to allow them to be innovative than giving them options to build their core by sitting on the yoga balls? Other students can benefit from the wiggly cushions during our mini-lessons.
Thank you again for learning about our innovative project!
