My students are in kindergarten through fifth grade with mild to severe disabilities, including Autism, Down syndrome, learning disabilities, and communication disorders.
"The best way to interrupt the cycle of poverty is to support children's physical, socio-emotional, and educational needs."-Cheryl Suliteanu.
Help my students to successfully participate and enjoy school! Our elementary school is in a high poverty area and many students come to school hungry. Not all of my students are able to participate fully in their general education without extra support. These materials will help my students learn how to be successful, independent, and happy in life.
My Project
My dream is to create a sensory room that is accessible school wide. My students with special needs need a place to go during the day in order to focus their bodies. I would like to create a LEGO wall as part of my sensory room. The LEGO plates and LEGO bricks will be a station that my students can go to in order to calm their bodies down and focus their minds so that they can return to class and return to learning academics. This LEGO wall will be an amazing addition to our school's new sensory room. LEGO therapy is now considered a successful type of play therapy for kids with special needs! Studies have found that LEGO bricks can help develop and reinforce play skills and social skills such as verbal and non-verbal communication, joint attention, task focus, sharing and turn-taking, and collaborative problem-solving.
