Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This year I will be teaching ESOL students in kindergarten and second grade. They come from a wide array of experiences with some having just arrived in the United States who are newcomers and speak no English to others who are close to exiting ESOL services.
My elementary school English Language Learners come from ten different countries including Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Mexico, Syria, Afghanistan, Mauritania, China, and Vietnam.
I love working with my students because they love learning and often share their stories. Each student has a unique story to tell and writing is a way for them to express themselves and at the same time improve their English.
My Project
I'd like to start off the school year by purchasing journals for my English Language Learners to write in each day to help improve their writing skills and practice new vocabulary. Classroom teachers give parents supply lists but I don't want to burden parents with one additional purchase, as many are juggling several jobs to support their families.
ESOL students will use these journals each day to express themselves and respond to writing prompts in order for them to improve their English.
In order to exit the ESOL program, students need to increase the amount of time they spend writing each day. With these journals, we can track their growth throughout the year.
Students will draw pictures and write about different texts they are reading and will have a book to keep at the end of the year and share with their families.
