My Students

Any teacher knows that each of their students come with exceptional abilities and a variety of backgrounds. Whether in pursuit of credit recovery, an accelerated course to graduation, or seeking refuge from a traditional classroom setting due to social, cognitive, or emotional needs, each student at our school comes to the table with authenticity and the desire to be creative in their own way.

I am constantly impressed, surprised, and moved by the way these students have taken the past two years of chaos and instability and have been able to express those struggles and hopes through the language of visual art.

With limited resources and limited skills, they show up both at home and in their digital curriculum classrooms to create. The artistic process lends itself to vulnerability and yet these students are willing to genuinely express themselves amid the pressures of an educational language riddled with grades, credits, percentages, and deadlines, and everyone feels behind. Time and time again, these students prove to me that despite the unique hurdles over the last year, they continue to foster the skills to think critically, collectively, and creatively.

My Project

While constraints can often facilitate creativity, it's easy to feel discouraged when a student has a great concept for an artwork only to have its creation be limited to art materials they happen to have at home. Most students can find a pencil, and many have a camera on their phone which restricts our curriculum to mostly drawing and photography. The goal of this project is to create an art kit for each of the 11 high schools in our school district that help facilitate our school's online students and support them in a more rich artistic experience regarding media use.

Instead of being limited to a mere pencil, students would have the ability to go to their digital curriculum classroom and choose from an array of colored pencils, chalk pastels, watercolor, and acrylic paint.

This opens up a world of both visual and tactile experiences and allows students to follow through with their artistic concepts instead of having to limit them to what a pencil or photograph can provide. This may also foster students' artistic endeavors that they would have otherwise not considered if they were unaware of the variety of art materials available.

Providing these art materials would be both an equalizer for diverse socioeconomic, emotional, and cognitive backgrounds, and a facilitator of all creative endeavors at our school.
