My students are most engaged when they are being creative and hands-on. I teach Family and Consumer Sciences, formally known as Home Economics, to middle school students. We talk about real-life situations and problem-solving. We are moving towards more choice-based practices in the classroom, and I feel as if my students' creativity is limited by the options available. So many students want to do projects involving photos and videos, but the Chromebooks make it hard. Chromebooks do not have rear cameras, so students miss out on the opportunity to do something they really enjoy. I want my students' creativity to grow. They have so much potential! They come into class every day willing to learn, and I want to give them every opportunity to learn, be creative, and solve problems.
My Project
We are moving towards more choice-based learning with real-life applications. I teach Family and Consumer Sciences, so most of the content I teach lends well to real-life applications. My focus is on choice-based learning.
I want my students to have every opportunity and tool available to them when it comes to making their choice!
Right now, students struggle to do projects that require pictures or videos of them completing a task, but they only have Chromebooks. Chromebooks do not have a rear-facing camera which makes it hard for students to take good quality photos and videos for projects. Not only does an iPad have a rear-facing camera, but there are apps that work better on an iPad than the Chromebooks. The options students would have available to them with Chromebooks and iPad are endless. In addition, iPads work well with Google, so students would be able to do work on an iPad and save it in their Google Drives. They could access the work on their Chromebooks to continue working as needed.
I want students to be able to do projects they want and are passionate about. When students enjoy what they are doing, they are more engaged and motivated to keep working.
