Do you remember your mother, babysitter or teacher placing colorful items for you to create using your vivid imagination? I can remember the excitement and endless possibilities of glitter, ribbon, buttons, paper and more. There is just not money in our budget to provide this for our students.
I teach an enthusiastic, eager to learn group of young students.
They attend a large elementary school in a suburban area. The students' life experiences range from those who have traveled to other countries to those who have only been in our town. Part of our school curriculum to to promote creativity and thinking.
My Project
Although we spend time on covering the basics, I believe that part of my role is to foster creativity in our students. In the future they will bring that creativity to solve the problems of the world. Part of our school curriculum to to promote creativity and thinking.
These materials will allow students to explore their creative side. I often put out a variety of materials and allow students to design and create what they would like. Unfortunately, with budget cuts I am limited as to what materials I have to use. We do recycle some materials for them to use. I would like to put a wider variety of materials in their hands. The items I am requesting, such as paper, glitter and pompoms, will give them a chance to be more creative. They develop such pride when given the opportunity to plan and execute their own projects.
Creativity is not something that is fostered as it should be in our schools.
We are too focused on standardized testing. I want to give the students an opportunity with time and materials to develop their creativity!
