Help me give my students a variety of scratch art materials so they can experience a feeling of self-satisfaction and pride when they create something pretty that can be given to another person for Christmas if they want.
The students at my school are challenged in many ways, not only academically, but also personally. Most of them struggle in all of their classes because they struggle with reading. They come from homes that struggle to nurture them in positive ways that most people take for granted. Many of them do not have the confidence they need to succeed in school. As young as they are, they are discouraged, frustrated, and have low self-esteem. As their teacher, I want them to learn that they can find ways to cope with their problems, that someone does care about their feelings, and that there are ways to feel better about themselves and their situations.
Children need to have fun and be creative, but there is so little time in classes today for anything except getting through the lessons, so that they can be prepared for the test.
I think this is a reason we have so many behavioral problems. I know from personal experience that art and music have a profound impact on people of all ages. I know, without a doubt, that when children are encouraged and allowed to be creative, they feel better about themselves and it shows.
My students need the experience of feeling good about themselves. Being still and quiet and focused on a task they want to complete is good for them, but not what they get to do often. The opportunity to do a short and relaxing scratch art project will motivate them to behave better, complete ELA lessons, and can make a lasting impression. I think it will significantly improve classroom behavior. Our school is often chaotic and stressful, and it is difficult to get students to stay on task in ELA class. They are academically challenged and their personal needs are not being met in many ways outside of school. As the holidays get closer, I think my 6th grade students would love the opportunity to make something to give as a gift. They would benefit from the self-satisfaction of creating, in several ways on many levels, and I want to give them this experience and opportunity with a variety of scratch art materials.
