Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
When I dismissed my students on March 13th, I said, “See you in two weeks.” Little did I know that two weeks would turn into a month, and a month would turn into not returning for the rest of the school year. These are unprecedented times. My students are at a real disadvantage when it comes to having the resources they need to continue their education at a distance. I teach at a school in East Los Angeles, where most of the students come from low-income homes. At least half of my students have siblings and only one parent to rely on for their basic needs. School supplies are not a priority in the family budget, when it is difficult enough to afford a roof over their heads and food for the table.
My kids deserve the opportunity to be their best!
The school provided them with Chromebooks to continue to receive instruction from me at home. It is still difficult. It is not the same as having me there physically to guide them through difficult situations, but they are trying their best with the little that they have.
My Project
In class, I will supplement needed supplies for my every-day teaching. I have been teaching virtually as best as I can, and the kids have been trying their best to keep up. One of my students even logged on to my virtual classroom from the laundromat because she couldn’t stay home by herself and she didn’t want to miss a day of class. I want to start teaching art since that is one of their favorite things to do. I want them to be able to work on projects at home, but they do not have the needed materials.
My kids need an outlet to express themselves!
They are working hard on their academic subjects, but they also need art as a release and a way to express themselves in positive ways. I want to give each one a drawing pad and drawing and creating tools that they can use at home. I want every Friday that we meet to be a celebration of another week completed by doing an art lesson or assigning them a project to work on independently to show their creativity.
