This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are emotionally disturbed from low socio-economic families with some of the most incredible skill sets that I have ever seen in a Behavior Transition Center! I have six exceptional learners who all possess unique talents of their own. One of them is a chemist who is currently working on a one of a kind "web shooter", one is a prolific writer, two of them are computer technologist, one is an avid musician and my only female in the group is a professional organizer!
These students have a great deal of untapped potential and they would be much further ahead if they had adequate support systems in place to enhance their day to day learning experiences.
My students are in dire need of better technology in the classroom so that they can further develop the raw talents that they possess. I am requesting iPads or tablets to foster this effort.
My Project
Theses tablets will give my exceptional learners the opportunity to utilize modern technology while learning. For example, the students can learn about other cultures in foreign countries via YouTube and learning is more interesting when using technology so it is easier for the students to remain on task.
Nevertheless, my students operate at a disadvantage daily because they are forced to use outdated technology and due to being displaced to another building by Hurricane Harvey, we lost several printers and computers as well as other supplies that we utilized for instruction.
The art supplies will help them to engage in an activity that will help to de-escalate them when they become anxious or aggressive and require some quiet down time. Also, it will develop their budding artistic abilities and give them a deeper appreciation for art. Most of my students are in a self contained environment most of the day and these items would give them a much needed change of pace.
