Help me give my students a scissor caddy and school scissors, safety lacing needles, wooden hoops, embroidery floss, a natural burlap roll, and multi color beads for our sewing project.
My classroom consists of 20 enthusiastic and inquisitive young learners with active imaginations and kind hearts. Many of the children are English language learners while encountering their first classroom setting. I work in partnership with my assistant teacher to create a safe, supportive environment for my students with a focus on literacy and language development. Together, we set the foundation for learning through small group literacy, art, mathematics, and science activities while balancing the school day with social-emotional problem-solving and self help practices. Our activities also promote kinetic movement for active learners as well as whole child free choice centers.
My Project
For our upcoming family living theme, we will explore the book Owen by Kevin Henkes in which Owen's worn out blanket is transformed into a handkerchief for him to use as a comfort object through his mother's sewing. We would like to introduce the children to beginner sewing in order to support fine motor development, eye-hand coordination and creativity.
We also would like to promote the value in creating and making something by hand.
The children will turn the burlap fabric pieces into a work of art through the use of colorful embroidery floss and beads while sewing together at the art center as a community. The plastic sewing needles will allow children to safely explore and the wooden hoops will help to hold their sewing projects in place. The alphabet and color beads will add literacy and language to the experience. Additionally, the scissors will help the children to cut their burlap piece along with the embroidery floss throughout the project.
