Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom is comprised of 23 kindergarten students eager to learn and fulfill their dreams. Over half of my students speak a language other than English at home, and they amaze me daily as they support each other to develop English fluency through teamwork, storytelling, and play. In our classroom, we have future doctors, teachers, police officers, princesses, nurses, and a big giant.
For the past seven months, I have had the daily opportunity to watch my students work hard and collaborate with their peers to learn and grow as readers, authors, and mathematicians.
My students love our read-aloud time and do an incredible job of making observations about our stories and drawing connections across texts and from their own lives. We not only learn our academic standards, but also the social-emotional skills needed to accomplish all of their big dreams.
In our classroom, we collaborate with families to set and achieve goals. So far this year, my students have logged over 400 books in their take-home reading logs. They complete weekly homework and participate in our book bag program to develop reading fluency and comprehension.
My Project
This project includes resources and manipulatives essential to kindergarten learning and exploration. Young children learn through play and creative activities. Our kindergarten experience is centered around activities that help children develop written and verbal expression skills, explore the world around them, and develop a foundational understanding of literacy and math skills that will support them throughout their education.
With these resources my students will have the opportunity to express themselves through art and to use manipulatives to make math problems come to life.
Study after study demonstrates the centrality of play in early childhood learning experiences. It is my hope that an enriching and joyful kindergarten experience will foster a lifelong love of learning in each of my students.
