Most of my students come from economically disadvantaged homes.
Many live in homes with 3 or more families. Sometimes entire families live in one bedroom and they share living spaces with 3 or more families to make ends meet. A majority of students do not have English speaking parents, so this makes getting any help with homework a dilemma. They seek the help of siblings or fellow students and most times come to class unprepared. This is not by choice! My students love school! They come to class excited to be with their classmates and are always eager to learn. The students always help each other and are amazingly excited for each other's accomplishments. They are working on becoming wonderful and respectful citizens of our community. Their economic status should never affect their education. Sadly, a great deal of these students fall behind. We have transformed our classroom into a place that instills a love of learning, a place they can't wait to come to! Money should not determine how far a student can go and all that they are able to achieve!
My Project
The balloons will help my students create their own Macy's Day Parade Balloon characters. They have read and researched the history of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. They are eager to plan and create their own balloons in which they will "parade" through our school before winter break.
The animal erasers have been a great addition to our incentives and social emotional learning activities this year.
The students earn a new desk pet each month and are able to "purchase" additions to their desk pet's home. They can purchase "snacks and friends" to join their desk pet in their home. They are learning responsibility by taking care of their pets each day. The students can interact with their pets with their classmates to discuss their feelings each day.
