Creativity and Happiness through Art and Reading

Help me give my students art supplies and novels for enrichment. My students need scissors, paints, markers, etc. as well as classroom novels.

My Students

My students are special! They show up every day with a desire to learn, listen, and be heard. COVID-19 has been a challenge to both educators and students alike. I feel like it has taken a toll on my students' mental health as well as their learning. I see more anxiety than ever before. This year I see holes in their learning because they were first graders during the first shut-down.

My Project

Power Hour is an activity I have implemented during COVID-19. It is an hour that we use to find which learning activities we enjoy and are good at. This has really helped with the added anxiety the students have experienced during these rough times. Art is an activity that helps students become more focused and better readers. During Power Hour, my students create art projects that demonstrate their learning. They are also given time to read or listen to reading (self choice chapter books. This learning time has greatly helped alleviate anxiety.
