My Students

I teach at a Title I School in Wisconsin where my students come from a variety of backgrounds, especially bilingual households with over 60% of our students receiving free or reduced-price lunch.

Many students need a safe, encouraging, loving, nurturing environment to host their learning as well as a safe place to make mistakes.

My students are wiggly and active. They like to move around and be in an environment that allows them to do so. My students are scientists, authors, important, leaders, explorers, readers, thinkers, creators, and loved.

My Project

We are requesting bouncy chair bands, area rugs, a storage bench, a round table with stools, cushions and mats. Flexible seating is a great option for students to use while attaining their education.

All of these items will be used for students to sit in a comfortable area to achieve their best effort.

Flexible seating provides: choice, benefits to physical health, comfort, community, collaboration, commitment to Learning, communication, sensory input, and fun!

Choice: Students feel empowered by having some degree of choice and control over their environment. Flexible seating allows students to choose where they work and with whom. It also allows them to change their location and positions as needed.

Physical Health: Flexible seating allows them to wobble, rock, bounce, lean or stand, which increases oxygen flow to the brain, blood flow and core strength.

Comfort: Flexible seating encourages students to find their best spot to stay calm, focused and productive.

Community: Flexible seating encourages students to share both. And, it encourages them to take turns in different locations and with different seating options.

Collaboration: Flexible seating allows students to quickly and easily pair up, work in small groups, or discuss as a whole class – without moving mountains of heavy desks to establish eye contact.

Commitment to Learning: While research on flexible seating is limited, it’s clear that learning environments can have a direct impact on student achievement.

Communication: It also requires introducing higher-order thinking skills, like problem-solving, and emotional skills, like conflict resolution.

Sensory Input: Many flexible seating options stimulate students’ sense of touch. This type of stimulation can help children focus and process information. Sensory input is especially helpful for students with ADHD, ADD, and ASD.

Fun: Flexible seating makes learning fun!
