My students need a MacBook Pro 15" with lots of memory to bring literature to life by writing, creating, filming, and editing original movies and creating animated comic strips and books.

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

I teach in an alternative learning environment that serves several populations within one building. We are a step-down unit for children leaving state institutions (both mental and punitive), and we serve those students who, if not for us, would drop out. The majority of these students receive free lunch, and their parents can only afford the basic necessities. Attending movies is an extravagance, access to Apple products is a luxury, but gaining critical thinking skills is a necessity. While they read everyday, it is difficult for many of them to create authentic demonstrations of learning. They struggle with writing, but excel in visual arts.

If my students had a MacBook Pro with the Pro Apps, they could literally bring characters to life and foster a deeper love for reading and possibly the arts.

My Project

My students are inquisitive and thirsty for new opportunities to explore reading and gain a deeper understanding of what they've read. Having a MacBook Pro will enable them to demonstrate a higher level of understanding and use their critical thinking skills by creating visual alternative endings, plot diagrams, animated storyboards, and even write, create, direct, film and edit their own original works. They can create their own digital stories, thereby becoming authors!

This donation will help struggling readers and writers better understand, apply critical thinking, analyze, evaluate and create authentic demonstrations of literacy.

We have a very nice home and all of the accessories for our MacBook Pro. We currently have a protective hardshell case, a lightening wall charger, and a VGA adapter so that we can use the MacBook Pro with our iPad Pro. My students are well versed in the use and care of the computer because the they have been using the iPad and my iPhone for years. They were gifted with a giftcard for the purchase of a Pro Apps bundle. All we need is the computer.
