My Students

I teach middle school in a neighborhood school. Many students walk to school, and many of their parents attended this school as well! The median income for students at my school is $45,000 a year. Often, students are unable to provide their own supplies for school and depend on teachers to provide them.

Owning a personal set of supplies can provide a student with a sense of self worth and pride!

We strive to create an environment where all students can learn, without the worry of being unable to provide materials needed for class.

My Project

Our school began a House System (a la Harry Potter) in 2016-17. One large component of the House system are our Dens- students are assigned a Den Leader in their 6th grade year, and students remain with that Den Leader through their 8th grade year. The Den Leader serves as a mentor for the students. Within the Den students work on Growth Mindset, School Pride, and developing relationships with each other and their mentor teacher. Many of the Den activities require art supplies. Placing basic art supplies into the hands of 1/3 of our student body will empower our students and fuel their creativity. We want ALL of our students to feel excitement about and ownership of their school!
