Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a Title I low income school located in Illinois. In my classroom, I teach 21 energetic ESL kindergarten students experiencing school for the first time! As excited they are ready to learn, I am just as excited and committed to providing the most engaging and motivating experience in their academics adventure. Most of my lessons, if not all, provide a hands-on opportunity because it creates a unique learning, memorable, and pleasurable opportunity.
A Makerspace creates a unique learning environment that provides inquiry and the "maker" process, providing creative and open-ended experiences developing foundational skills in creative and critical thinking to engage throughout their schooling and future careers.
By providing multi-sensory personalized experiences I am fostering the innovation needed, for my students to expand their mindset while supporting their early learning skills. It also creates opportunities that they may not experience with limited resources at home or within their community. Teaching my students to have a different mindset, despite their hardships, is fundamental in enhancing all learning within my classroom and in life.
My Project
Makerspaces provide hands-on, creative ways to encourage students to design, experiment, build, and invent as they deeply engage in science, engineering, and tinkering. Within this space, Students have the tools and materials to create projects that build on learning, allowing them to use their creativity to show their understanding of a concept, topic, or idea and then share it with others.
Students learn at a higher level when they are engaged in creative thinking.
A Makerspace supports the opportunity "making" their ideas come to life with deeper thinking and retention!
A Makerspace creates an environment where one is only limited by one’s imagination. It mixes all aspects of STEM–Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math–and sprinkles it with imagination for an exploration of “what if.”
In our classroom, I combine many of these aspects within lessons and realized that the engagement of students skyrocketed! So I jumped at the opportunity, applied, and was selected to participate in the Makerspace Bootcamp conference by Pathfinders this summer!
This project will start stocking our Magnificent Space with building supplies such as magnetic blocks or manipulatives such as the wood planks to explore and create like an architect creating buildings and bridges. Students can use many of the chosen books such as "Rosie the Engineer" to help guide in creating rockets or vehicles thinking like an engineer. This project also allows for creativity in puppet story-making, problem-solving in a dinosaur lab, or even designing a new chair for Goldilocks with popsicle sticks, endless opportunities all guided by the imagination of the child.
No longer are we motivating students to climb the corporate ladder but rather encouraging them to build one, divergently, and creatively. This space, a Makerspace, facilitates this learning platform.
