Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This school is a Title I school. The students at this school come from a variety of cultures and family situations. The students from this community have rare opportunities to excel in their academics and little opportunity to explore the wonderful world of art music, and technology. The neighborhood consists of many low income apartments and properties. Opportunities are few and far between.
I am amazed at the excitement to compose and create wonderful, adventurous, and unique stories using writing tools as a way to bring in student's creativity and love for writing.
Students in our school lack the essential tools to compose and create many basic visual presentations such as, country brochures, country flags and maps, as well as others. Students are asked to purchase a variety of presentation tools, but for many it is difficult. We really try to give each student the same benefits as and tools as everyone else.
My Project
The foam boards will be used to do a big project where the students will learn about topographical maps. The students will create a topographical map of a country on the foam boards using salt dough. The students will learn about the map key and paint the map accordingly. Students also create a travel brochure to go along with the map and flag. Maps, brochures, and flags will be displayed in the hall for all to take part in.
I am amazed at how excited students are to do writing activities using a variety of colors, textures, and tools other than regular pencils and pens.
Students will use the variety of pens (ink, gel, different colors) to experiment with and to do final writings. The students actually enjoy using ink and calligraphy pens as the tips allow them to add a flair to what they are writing. The ink in the pens are running out from the constant use, and we need more. Students are slowing down with their work because they want it to be perfect. Using a variety of colors has allowed students to be creative with their cursive and their writing. Students are excited to use these tools in a variety of writings such as: letters, cards, stories, notes, drawings, poster presentations, and etc. The writing area is the busiest area in the classroom. It is so fun to watch them create and illustrate.
During this past year, we were lucky enough to get a Fire HD tablet donated to our class. I have noticed that it has been dropped many times, I am hoping that getting a case for it will help protect it a little better and that it is available for student use. Never really realized how important it was to protect.
