Students who struggle with getting ideas down on paper can be overwhelmed with worrying about spelling words correctly, using correct grammar, and organizing their thoughts on paper. For others, handwriting is difficult and interferes with their thought process. Unfortunately, in my class many of these students become reluctant writers.
I have found a wonderful product to help these children find success in their ability to generate ideas and not be frustrated to the point that they hate writing!
I work in a wonderful public elementary school in Mill Valley, CA where we truly care about all students becoming successful learners. I work with those students, in grades K-5, who just need that extra time and push to become successful in school. My program consists of approximately 20 students who would find this product very useful.
The product we are requesting allows students to use a keyboard and activate a topic dictionary giving them fast access to very specific words and phrases. It assists them with writing complete, grammatically correct sentences, thereby helping them to feel successful and write longer and more meaningful compositions. It generates possibilities for the words they want based on spelling, grammar rules, context clues and vocabulary. The end result is confidence in their writing ability!
The product is called Co:Writer SmartApplet, Co:Writer 4000 & Alpha Smart 3000 Keyboard. The AlphaSmart keyboard comes preloaded with Co:Writer SmartApplet and the Co:Writer 4000 Bundle is loaded onto my computer. The students are able to transfer their written work from the AlphaSmart keyboard to my computer and continue writing or editing their work. This frees up the AlphaSmart for another student to use.
All students can become successful writers and this is one product that takes the frustration that some students feel out of the writing process and gives them that much needed dose of success.
