My students need digital scales, replacement bulbs, a spectrum bulb set, and some other new lab equipment to use in our modernized classroom. With the changes made to our room we need to update and change some of our lab exercises.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach Earth and AP Environmental Science in high school. I am always trying to do new inquiry labs with my students to help them become excited about science and to have experience using lab equipment to do real, analytical science. I want students to think and create, not just observe science.
I teach at a high school in a diverse low income neighborhood in Orange County, California.
Many of my students will be the first generation in their family to attend college.
The lab materials I am requesting will help more students than most DonorsChoose projects because I share my lab space and equipment with the other 3 Earth Science teachers at my school site. We expect that over 400 students will use this equipment this year and many thousands more in the coming years.
My Project
The windows were replaced in my classroom as part of the modernization work that occurred over the summer. They are beautiful and energy efficient. Unfortunately, they do not let in enough sunlight to allow me to grow plants using natural sunlight. For this reason, I need light bulbs that are designed for growing plants.
There is no way to completely darken the room either, so I am unable to use the equipment that we currently use to study the spectrum of light that is given off by different elements. The spectrum bulb kit should allow me to do a similar activity in a room that is not completely dark.
The digital balances I am requesting are to use in several labs that we already do in class. Using a digital balance will save a lot of class time so that we can finish these labs more easily within a class period. This is important since my lab space is shared by several other teachers.
This project will allow hundreds of students in participate in inquiry science this year.
I am hoping that it will spark interest in many of them to continue on taking science courses and to choose a field of science as a career. I know that by doing so my students will be able to achieve a middle class lifestyle that many dream of achieving.
