My elementary school is a public, Title I, IB PYP candidate school located in Southeastern North Carolina. We serve a wide range of families, from those who are military connected to working class to those in high poverty. My students all receive free meals, as we are a federally recognized CEP school.
My students have a wide range of abilities and are highly energetic and curious about the world around them and beyond.
Many students cannot relate to places, careers, and experiences they read and are taught about that are beyond our community. I would love to be able to further foster inquiry and develop STEM skills in all students beyond what our current funding allows. Thank you for supporting my students and believing that these students can succeed!
My Project
Our innovative minds need textiles to use in our developing Makerspace. Many students find difficulties in the traditional curricular areas and lose interest in education. Through the use of creative play and art expression, these students are given an opportunity to enjoy school once again. The ultimate goal of our project is for students to be able to look at their creations with pride and accomplishment.
Sewing, knitting, and crocheting will not only provide additional creative outlets for all of our students, but also enhance fine motor skills and patience.
Wooden embroidery hoops, embroidery floss, and aida cloths will be used to make small cross-stitched projects. Through cross-stitching, students will also work on color and pattern awareness. Making with yarn by using crochet hooks is another way for students to use art to express their creativity. String art kits encourage students to utilize geometry and patterns to create a variety of artistic arrangements.
